I disagree. It's TOO expensive and this technology isn't as deep as you'd like to believe it is. It's definitely NOT worth 500.00 dollars, are you kidding??? lol...
You have to be a hardcore fool to jump on this. I recommend buying a working sharp definition CRT television instead. Which if you look on Craigslist, there are still MANY to purchase which work perfectly fine.
I have my 27" Philips tube TV and it works like a charm. No better way to play old consoles. A working tube tv at this size won't cost you more than 100.00 dollars. Sometimes you'll see even cheaper but nice sets for sale.
500 dollars up scaler...hahah, yeah right. It's a nice upscaler...but not 500.00 dollars nice. lol

The other reviewers apparently do NOT know what they are talking about.
This thing is the bomb, and totally worth the money.
Regarding the guy who knows about electronics:
No you don't know the true price of this, this thing performs better than a lot of upscalers in the 1000$+ segment.
These things just are expensive, simple as that.

What is the purpose of this unit -- to convert D-terminal to an HDMI signal? Why couldn't we just directly use an HDMI cable between the source and the display...?

Too expensive!

What a ripoff! I know this thing is good, but NOT at this price.
Acceptable price would be not more than $199 other than that is just pure ripoff. I work with electronic so I know the REAL price of this thing.
